Window replacement can be confusing. It seems like too much from the very beginning, and if you have never done it before, it is hard to understand where to start. To help you in your home repair endeavor, here are the ten key steps you must take to replace windows on your own.
1. Determine a Type of Replacement Window
Replacement windows are available in three types: sach kits, inserts, and full-frame units. The choice depends on the scale of your replacement job. If an existing frame is still good, you’ll only need a stash. An insert is a ready-made window that is attached to old jabs. And if those need replacement too, full-frame is your choice.
2. Measuring
This is arguably the most important step. To measure an existing frame correctly, you’ll need to measure in three places on each side — in the middle, then left and right, or middle and bottom. Then pick the shortest measurement for each side. If you order the wrong size replacement, you will spend money in vain due to the inability to return it.
3. Removing an Old Sash
Start with the lower sash. To remove it, you will need to unscrew the wooden stoppers. Be gentle in case you want to reinstall them later. Then go for the upper one. Pull the top of the sash forward and then pivot it from the liners.
4. Replacing the Jamb Liners
Pry those off with a flat bar without damaging the interior and exterior casting.
5. Preparing the Frame
The frame is now exposed. which means the toy can fix any fractures. To do that, first scrape off any old paint and use wood putty fitted for exterior use to fill in holes and dents. After that, even it with sandpaper.
6. Getting Ready for Insulation Foam
To prepare windows for applying insulation foam, you must drill three holes of 3/8 inch in diameter in the windowsill and the upper jamb. One must be in the middle and two on the sides. Pick a non-expanding foam because otherwise, the frames will bend.
7. Insulating
Shoot the insulation foam in the holes drilled earlier and also inside sash-weight pockets. Then, let it dry out for at least six hours and cut the excess.
8. Installing New Window
Now, it is finally time to insert the new window. Do it from inside the house starting with fitting the lower part on the windowsill. After that, push it inside firmly against the exterior casings.
9. Adjusting the Window
Before screwing it for good, make sure the window is centered and operates smoothly and easily. If it doesn’t, use shims to adjust its position. After everything is fine, screw the window to the frame. There should be special holes in it to do it.
10. Final Touch
Fill in the gaps on the outside with either caulk or rubber foam depending on their size. On the inside, use foam for it. After that, prime and paint the window. And that’s it, your new window is installed.
