    Double Glazing vs. Secondary Glazing

Windows play a crucial part in the house by providing natural light as well as ensuring that there is proper circulation of air. But windows also have a setback which is letting crucial heat escape during the cold winter season, thus increasing your energy bills. To prevent this, most homeowners usually use secondary or double glazing. These two options have their own unique benefits when it comes to preventing heat loss during the cold winter season. However, they differ greatly in terms of installation, maintenance and costs.

How does double glazing work and what are its benefits?

Double glazing usually has two sheets of glass separated with a small gap. The gap is important because it acts as an insulator thus preventing heat loss. The gap between the glass sheet is usually a vacuum and in some cases filled with inert gas like argon to prevent heat loss by limiting the movement of warm air between the two sheets.

Double glazing is preferred by many people because it helps to reduce electricity bills, provide insulation and also enhance your house soundproofing. However, all these benefits come at a cost. Double glazing is usually more costly than secondary glazing but its price is worth it because of the benefits it provides.

Proper installation of double glazed windows is very important, meaning it needs to be installed by a professional. Cleaning them is also tricky because it is very difficult to access the glass that is between the panels.

How does secondary glazing work and what are its benefits?

Secondary glazing is a technique where an extra layer of glass is added to the current glazing but from the inside. This option is ideal for individuals who have financial challenges and thus cannot afford to replace the existing windows or those who are living in neighborhoods with planning restrictions.

Like double glazing, secondary glazing also enhances soundproofing, reduces heat loss through insulation and also helps to lower your energy bills. Installing a secondary glazing is cheaper and much easier compared to double glazing. In fact, some types of double glazing can be installed by homeowners. More so, cleaning secondary glazing is much easier because the glass is not sealed. However, they need to be cleaned using a special cleaner.

Double glazing vs. secondary glazing, which one should you choose?

When deciding between these two types of glazing, there are several factors that you need to consider including installation costs, aesthetics, your existing window, type of building and ease of cleaning. For instance, if price and ease of installation is a major factor, then you should choose secondary glazing. On the other hand, if you want better insulation and durability, then double glazing is a better choice for you.

    Final thoughts

Windows can cause heat loss, especially if they are not well insulated. The best way to enhance insulation and reduce your energy bills is by installing the right window glazing. Both secondary glazing and double glazing have their own pros and cons as discussed above. It is upon you to choose an option that suits your individual needs and lifestylefun budget.
